The Prairie Dogs

(or her little babies)

Sweet-Em's

(Born 2000 - Joined the family 2006)

Picked up to with Homer to fill out the family after Gabriel's passing. A small growth was found under her chin after we got her. That has since been removed and is now doing very well. She loves to make house and move things around. Her profile was used for the PD image on the front of the Prairie Delight feed packaging.

She is now over 10 years old. That is ancient in prairie dog years. She has developed a problem with one of her back legs. She is not as mobile as she was a year ago.

 Homer

(Born 2001 - Joined the family 2006)

Picked up to with Sweet-Em's to fill out the family after Gabriel's passing. Definitely the over protective male of the bunch. Always the last one to bed down at night.

Now getting on the old side, he is slowing down a bit. Having some lower hip problems, possibly arthritis.

Bella

Born ? - Joined the family 2007)

Another rescue. Very shy and skittish. Kind of a loner. Getting a little on the fat side now. Starts winning when things don't go her way.

She developed a spot on her rear paw that she will not leave alone. Also like running the wheels a lot now. Slimming down a little..

Solie

Picked up in 2008 with Miss Piggy. She is the most complacent and nonchalant Prairie Dog I have ever seen. Loves a good scratching. But then what Prairie Dog doesn't?

Miss Piggy

Another Lula-Belle. Always digging around and getting into things. Totally far sighted, cant see 2 inches in front of her face.

Was very hard to handle when we got her. Every once in awhile you would touch a certain location on her and she would cry out or even try to bite you. We later found she had a hernia on her lower back. Got that fixed and she all better now.  Always scampering around searching for things. But uses all her energy up fast, so she is the 1st one to bed down at night.

Lula-Belle

Born 2001 - Joined the family 2001. Passed away July 2008. I miss her so.

Our 1st Prairie Dog, Mitch's baby. Purchased at a pet store before the ban of 2002. By far the most inquisitive and curious. Always getting into things. Climbing into boxes, opening cabinet doors and just plain getting into trouble. She only have 3 toes on the the right rear foot. This was due to a piece of straw getting wrapped around her leg and cutting off the circulation. Damage was done before it was discovered. She seems to shed twice as many time per year as the others. She passed away after getting a form of cancer.

Sweet-Honey

(Born 2001 - Joined the family 2002- Passed away Nov 2006)

Our 2nd Prairie Dog. Bought in 2002 just before the imposed ban. She was to keep Lula-Belle company. Always a large Prairie Dog, she had a bad eye and small cyst on her jaw when got her in 2002. That was all taken care of and she became a very healthy prairie dog. She loved to eat and weighed twice as much as the others. But she would always stop eating for a good scratching. She passed away after developing odontoma.

 Gabriel

(Born ? - Acquired 2005 - Passed away Jan 2006)

She was our 3rd Prairie Dog. She was a rescue and was in very bad health when we got her. Badly abused by her previous owners. She was covered in sores and breathing badly. Nursed back to health the best we could do, but succumbed to massive tumors brought on by her poor living conditions before our rescue.
